Pace School is grounded in the concept of providing a safe place—a sanctuary—for children and youth to risk new learning. In the words of Dr. Sandra Bloom, psychiatrist and researcher, “Creating sanctuary refers to the group experience of creating and maintaining safety in a social environment.” In the unique social setting that is Pace School, we understand that the creation of sanctuary is fundamental to progress for our students, takes commitment at every level of the organization and must begin with a deep-seated respect for the complex challenges facing our children and youth.
